Spinning Gate Shopping Centre in conjunction with their waste management partner, B&M Waste Services Limited, celebrated previous success in 2017 & 2018 when they achieved a Green Apple award for Environmental Best Practise for their waste management achievements. They are delighted to receive their 3rd award for their achievements in 2019, ensuring 100% of the waste produced from site was diverted from landfill.
The award nomination for the 2019 Green Apple Environment Award submission provided details of all the environmental successes achieved during the year.
These successes included reducing the total volume of waste produced from site by 11% from previous year (80,420kg volume of waste produced in 2019, compared to 91,100kg of waste produced in the previous year, a reduction of 10,680kg), the centre also reduced the volume of waste produced from site by 25% in the past 3 years!
100% of the waste processed from site was diverted from landfill for the 3rd year running. The centre reduced its energy consumption by 10.3%, saving 13,760kWh from the previous year. During the year, the centre implemented numerous environmental initiatives to help contribute to its 3rd Award: which included continuing with digital communications with its retail stores, appointing a recycling charity who collect used IT and electrical equipment from site. The centre continued to promote its used postage stamp recycling scheme, inviting shoppers to drop off their used postage stamps, the centre then sends onto Kicks Count charity for recycling. In addition, Spinning Gate now recycles wooden pallets, used store fittings, pens, batteries, printer cartridges, plastic hangers, light fittings and source local charities to donate unwanted items to minimise the volume of waste produced from the centre.
